Join us this summer as we count down the top 50 Vancouver Canucks players of all time! #3 – Pavel Bure
Even as time marches on, the glow of Pavel Bure’s time with the Vancouver Canucks has not faded. Simply put, the Russian Rocket remains the most explosive and electrifying player to ever wear Canucks colours. That is why he sits third on our list of the all-time best Canuck players.
His back-to-back 60-goal seasons in 1992-93 and again in 1993-94 will likely never be matched. Those stand as the two best goal-scoring seasons in franchise history, by a margin of five goals. His 110-point season established a new franchise mark and stood until Henrik Sedin eclipsed it with 112 points in 2009-10. Bure won the Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year in 1992, represented the organization at four NHL All-Star games and was a massive part of the 1994 Canucks team that took the New York Rangers to seven games in the 1994 Stanley Cup Final.
For all of his accomplishments over the years, Bure’s NHL debut on November 5, 1991, against Winnipeg at the Pacific Coliseum is still regarded in these parts as one of the most memorable regular season games in franchise history – and that was without him finding the scoresheet. But a series of breathtaking end-to-end rushes gave Canucks fans and the hockey world a glimpse of the speed and skill that made the Moscow native such a special player.
In all, Bure recorded 254 goals and 478 points in 428 games for the Canucks. He sits fifth in all-time goals and seventh in points. Bure’s numbers (10 & 96) are both retired and hang from the rafters at Rogers Arena, and, in 2012, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Of course, a big part of the Pavel Bure story is how his time in Vancouver ended with an acrimonious contract stalemate and eventually a trade to the Florida Panthers in January 1999. Still, when it comes to on-ice accomplishments, Bure is rightfully remembered as one of the very best to ever play for the Vancouver Canucks.
