There might be some consequences for the dangerous play that happened this weekend.
According to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali – The Team, the NHL Department of Player Safety is looking into the hit Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust threw on Vancouver Canucks winger Brock Boeser near the end of Sunday’s game between the two teams.
Dhaliwal noted that there’s an expectation that Rust will receive supplemental discipline.
The incident in question happened just as time expired in the Canucks’ 3-2 loss to Sidney Crosby and company. While Boeser and his team were searching for the tying goal, Rust came from the side and delivered a blindside hit to Boeser, knocking the Minnesota native down in a heap as the final buzzer sounded.
Though the game was over, Rust was handed a two-minute minor penalty for an illegal check to the head. Boeser had to be helped off the ice by his teammates.
While there was no immediate reaction on the ice from Boeser’s teammates, postgame review of the play led many to call Rust’s hit unnecessary.
“I think it’s a pretty dirty play to be honest with you,” forward Jake DeBrusk told the media after the loss.
“It was a headshot,” head coach Adam Foote stated. “It was shoulder and his head. I’m sure the league will look at it because it was, even though he may have been desperate to get Boes down because it was a scrum at the net, I still think it was something that you got to be in control of your body. I thought it was a little bit of a vicious, vicious hit to the head.”
Boeser has suffered concussions before in his career, including when he took a hit to the head from Los Angeles Kings forward Tanner Jeannot in November of the 2024-25 season. While Jeannot was suspended for three games, Boeser ended up missing seven due to the injury.
Rust, who has a concussion history as well, has never been handed supplemental discipline in his NHL career.
In 50 games this season, Boeser has scored 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points, sitting tied for third on the team in scoring.
The Canucks (17-30-5) are last in the NHL, 16 points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
