Some positive offseason news for the Vancouver Canucks.
On his personal Instagram profile, Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko posted a picture of himself on the ice after a training session. It marked the first time Demko has skated since he underwent surgery this past January.
“Been a long road,” Demko wrote in the post. “A lot more work ahead, but let’s celebrate the good days!”
Demko has been out of action since he suffered an injury to his hip, which knocked him out for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. It was an early end to what was already a rough season for the 30-year-old, who has struggled to stay healthy since his Vezina-calibre 2023-24 season, which saw him get hurt in March, return just before the playoffs, before suffering another injury that knocked him out of the rest of the postseason. He only played 23 games during the 2024-25 campaign, making just 20 appearances this past year before being shut down.
Demko wasn’t posting earth-shattering numbers before the injury. On a team that ended up finishing with the worst record in the NHL, he posted a record of 8-10-1, with a 2.90 goals against average, a .897 save percentage and one shutout.
Despite battling injury, Demko signed a three-year, $8.5 million extension with the Canucks last summer, which is set to kick in on July 1. The contract includes a full no-movement clause for the duration of the deal. With fellow netminder Kevin Lankinen also under contract for the following four seasons, the Canucks are soaking up $13 million in cap space between the two puck-stoppers.
Demko has been a mainstay within the Canucks organization since the team took him in the second round, 36th overall, of the 2014 NHL Draft. After making his debut with Vancouver during the 2017-18 campaign, he became a regular in the lineup a couple of years later, establishing himself as one of the top young netminders for a few years. In 262 career appearances, he has a record of 134-99-21, with a 2.81 goals against average, a .909 save percentage and 10 shutouts.
