Hours after being traded to the Dallas Stars, defenceman Tyler Myers joined Donnie & Dhali to reflect on his time as a Vancouver Canuck and discuss the trade process from his point of view.
“Well, I mean, we’re very excited,” Myers replied when asked about the trade. “You know, everyone knows how much the city of Vancouver and the Canucks meant to my family and I. And then, you know, it’s just part of the business. I was lucky enough to have an opportunity the last couple of weeks here to see what options were out there. Then, when Dallas was becoming a possibility, that was very exciting for us. You know, I have family down there, being from Texas. So, just given that, and you know, how they’re doing as a team, already a great team. You know, it checks a lot of boxes. And we couldn’t be more excited.”
With Myers having full no-trade protection on his contract, Myers controlled the situation when it came to his destination. It was first reported that the Detroit Red Wings made the initial offer of a second-round pick for Myers. And while there was reporting that Myers wasn’t willing to waive to go to Detroit, he shut that down, sharing that it was more about assessing each opportunity to find the best situation for him, the final years of his career, and his family.
“I mean, Detroit was a very solid option, too. I know there were a lot of reports out there that I wasn’t, you know, willing to waive to go there, but that just wasn’t true. At the start of everything, it really wasn’t just about Dallas. It was early; we just wanted to know what was going to be available so we could assess everything. We could assess the city, how it is for family, the kids, what kind of schools. We really just wanted to take the time. And then, when it looked like Dallas was a potential option, then we did the same thing with them as we assessed the others.
“At the end of the day, we just landed on the fact that [the Stars] were checking a lot of boxes for us. You know, we’ve already been looking into different schools. I have family down there. It’s a great team. And, you know, it’s just a good fit.”
After signing a five-year contract in 2019, and then playing one-and-a-half seasons on his three-year extension signed in 2024, Vancouver is the destination in which he’s played the most career games. There was never much success during his time here, seeing just two years of playoff action. And while it wasn’t the smoothest of endings, admitting that the week-long trade process was “tough at different times,” Myers will remember his time with the Canucks very fondly.
“I just feel very fortunate,” Myers shared. “You know, not a lot of guys get that much time in one place. And it’s close to home for us. We feel very fortunate, very lucky, to have been able to spend that much time here. Obviously, a couple of years ago, you know, that season is one of the best memories for me as a Canuck. As I said, we love Vancouver and just couldn’t be more grateful that we were able to get a chance to play here.”
Myers ended the interview with a lasting note to Canucks fans:
“Just thank you,” Myers said with gratitude. “I couldn’t be more grateful to have an opportunity to play in front of the fans of Vancouver; I couldn’t be more grateful to have that opportunity to be a Canuck. Just feel very fortunate to have that chance.”

Long-time teammate, Brock Boeser, met with the media following the trade and had high praise for Myers and what he meant to him, the locker room, and how much his presence will be missed:
“He’s meant a lot. Obviously, he’s one of the oldest guys on our team. He’s such a good leader; such a good human being. He comes to the rink every day, and he’s a pro; he sets a good example for the young guys. So, we’re going to miss him, but he deserves a chance to go win a Cup.
“[His leadership leaves] a big hole. He had such a big voice in the locker room. As I said, he’s such a good leader. We definitely have to have guys step up and make sure that we get everyone on the right track and heading in the right direction.
“I think how he handled everything in the last week just proves to me everything I was thinking. He handled it so, so good. He showed up to the rink every day still [with] everyone knowing he was probably getting traded. Still working on his game; still in the gym; still communicating with guys; still acting like he’s here. I think that’s really important.”
