A day after the Vancouver Canucks held Tyler Myers out of the lineup due to trade-related reasons, two teams have surfaced as potential destinations for the veteran defenceman.
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Detroit Red Wings are the main target in a Tyler Myers trade, with the Dallas Stars also expressing interest.
Myers, 36, has been a member of the Canucks since he signed as a free agent in the summer of 2019. He signed a five-year, $30 million contract with an average annual value of $6 million until the standout 2023-24 season. That was Myers’ best season of the contract statistical season in Vancouver, finishing with five goals and 29 points and a plus-16 rating in 77 games.
His efforts helped the Canucks win their first Pacific Division title in franchise history. In the postseason, Myers formed a shutdown pair with former Canuck Carson Soucy that held Connor McDavid to just four 5v5 points throughout their second-round, seven-game series.
This season has been a struggle for the entire Canucks roster, including Myers. The 6’8″, right-shot defenceman has one goal and seven assists for eight points through 57 games. Myers’ minus-25 rating would be one off his worst in the NHL – minus-26 with the Buffalo Sabres in 2013-14.
The Houston, Texas native has one more season remaining on a three-year, $3 million AAV contract that includes a full no-movement clause. Myers will have the last say on where he wants to go, if he decides to move on.
On the right side, the Red Wings have Moritz Seider and Axel Sandin-Pellikka taking up two spots in their top four, with Jacob Bernard-Docker currently occupying the third-pair – who has sub-200 NHL games played since he was drafted in 2018. Detroit could also take on Myers’ full cap hit with over $13 million this season and $38 million next.
The Stars have a bigger need for Myers, with Miro Heiskanen – playing his off-side – Nils Lundqvist, and Alex Petrovic operating Dallas’ right side. With Tyler Seguin still not placed on season-ending long-term injured reserve, the Stars are $1.5 million over the salary cap. They would need to see a move like that happen, or have money go the other way, in order to acquire the Texas-born defenceman.
