Some positive news regarding one of the Vancouver Canucks‘ top scoring threats.
On Tuesday’s episode of Donnie & Dhali – The Team, Rick Dhaliwal reported that Canucks forward Conor Garland is expected to be back on the ice.
Dhaliwal mentioned that it’s still up in the air whether Garland will jump back in the lineup when the Canucks return home on Wednesday night to host the Chicago Blackhawks.
“Conor Garland is close,” Dhaliwal said. “We heard [head coach] Adam Foote say yesterday. I heard that Conor Garland’s going to skate today, which is a great sign. Can he get in the lineup for tomorrow? I don’t know. But it’s a good sign he’s skating today.”
Garland didn’t travel with the team on its recent three-game road trip, which saw them come away with wins over the St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators, though they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Minnesota Wild last Saturday. The reason for the 29-year-old’s absence stems from the collision that occurred between him and New York Rangers forward Sam Carrick on Oct. 28, forcing Garland to not return for the third period.
Captain Quinn Hughes initially didn’t travel with the Canucks as well, but returned to the lineup on Monday night, spurring his team to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Predators.
Despite his absence, Garland remains one of the top scorers on Vancouver’s roster through the first month of the season. In 11 games, he has scored three goals and eight assists for 11 points, the only Canuck to average a point per game this year.
Garland is in the final season of his current contract, with his six-year extension, which he signed on July 1, kicking in next year.
Dhaliwal also mentioned that defenceman Derek Forbort is back skating on Tuesday as well. The 33-year-old has been out of action since Oct. 11 and has been on injured reserve after playing just two games in his second season with the Canucks.
