A former Vancouver Canucks player has found a new home just before the 2026-27 season starts.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Hurricanes announced they have signed defenceman Pierre-Olivier Joseph to a one-year, $850,000 contract.

Joseph signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Canucks on July 2, 2025, last season. He played just 31 games in a Canucks uniform, scoring one goal and five assists for six points with a minus-16 rating while averaging the second-lowest ice time of his career, 13:18.

The 6’2″ left-shot defenceman scored six goals and 39 points in 62 games with the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL. Those efforts earned Joseph a 23rd-overall selection in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. He spent the next two seasons in the QMJHL, where he captained the Islanders and scored 20 goals and 51 assists for 71 points in 90 games. He was then traded to the Drummondville Voltigeurs for a playoff run.

Through 16 postseason games with the Voltigeurs, Joseph scored two goals and nine points. Those efforts weren’t enough, as the Voltigeurs lost in six games to the Halifax Mooseheads in the Semi-Finals.

Before that final year in Junior even began, Joseph was moved with Alex Galchenyuk to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a package that saw Phil Kessel go the other way. Joseph played his first professional year in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, where he scored three goals and 17 points in 52 games. He then got his first taste of NHL action the following year, scoring one goal and five points in 16 games in Pittsburgh.

Joseph bounced between the NHL and AHL that season before finding a full-time job in Pittsburgh for the 2022-23 season, where he scored five goals and 21 points in 75 games. The Laval, Quebec, native found himself on the move again when the Penguins traded him to the St. Louis Blues for future considerations in December of the 2024-25 season.

After one disappointing year as the seventh defenceman for the worst team in the league last season, Joseph now inserts himself into a completely different situation, where he will compete for a roster spot on the defending Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes.
