The Vancouver Canucks announced on Monday that they will not be tendering qualifying offers to five players: P-O Joseph, Nils Aman, Danila Klimovich, Chase Stillman and Jayden Grubbe. That means all five players will be eligible to become unrestricted free agents on July 1st.
Of the group, Joseph is the most notable considering he saw action in 31 NHL games for the hockey club last season. The depth defender scored once and set up five other goals while averaging 13:18 of ice time after signing with the club last summer. Joseph will turn 27 on Wednesday – the day he hits the open market.
Today’s announcement marks the end of two lengthy Canucks tenures for two others on the list. Nils Åman appeared in 132 games with the Canucks after signing with the organization as a free agent four years ago. He dressed for a pair of games last season, but spent most of the season in AHL Abbotsford. The 26-year-old also appeared in five games for the Canucks in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Aman was originally a sixth round draft choice of the Colorado Avalanche in 2020.
Meanwhile, Danila Klimovich is moving on after five years in the organization without ever cracking the big league line-up. The 2021 second round draft choice had seasons of 25, 18 and 17 goals in the American Hockey League but never earned an NHL opportunity. The 23-year-old scored four goals in Abbotsford’s run to the Calder Cup championship a year ago.
Chase Stillman played in just 24 games in Abbotsford in an injury plagued season. The former New Jersey first round draft pick had three goals and nine points in the minors. He was acquired from Pittsburgh as part of the deal that sent Arturs Silovs to the Penguins. Jayden Grubbe made just two appearances in Abbotsford after being acquired from Edmonton in a minor league deal for Josh Bloom in March.
Today’s moves free up contract spots that will give the Canucks flexibility as they continue to reshape their NHL and AHL rosters.
