The NHL Trade Deadline is just over a week away, and this year’s deadline projects to be a particularly busy one for the Vancouver Canucks.
The expectation for the Canucks is that they will move on from their pending unrestricted free agents: Evander Kane, Teddy Blueger, and David Kämpf. But following the Olympic break, the word on the street is that the Canucks are now open to trading some of their veterans with term as well.
Recent reports have indicated that Jake DeBrusk would welcome a change of scenery; the organization is no longer opposed to moving Conor Garland, and Tyler Myers is now being held out of game action for trade-related reasons.
According to multiple reports, the Detroit Red Wings are the main team targeting the Canuck defenceman. So what could they send Vancouver’s way in a potential Tyler Myers trade? Let’s take a look at the Red Wings’ assets and see what the Canucks might be interested in.

Picks

The Red Wings have mostly their full arsenal of draft capital over the following three seasons:
2026: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 7th (CGY)
2027: 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th
2028: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th
So, if a trade pick is what the Canucks desire, there aren’t many limitations on what the Canucks could ask for.

Prospects

Obviously, at this point of his career, Myers likely won’t fetch the Canucks one of the Red Wings’ top prospects. That takes the Carter Bear, Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, Nate Danielson, or Max Plante out of the running. However, there are three fairly intriguing prospects the Canucks could pivot to if draft picks are not what they desire.
Jesse Kiiskinen
Kiiskinen was selected in the third round (68th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators. The Red Wings acquired the 6’0″ right-winger in June of 2024, along with a second-round pick (which was then flipped to the San Jose Sharks to take on the Jake Walman contract) in exchange for Andrew Gibson.
The 20-year-old is currently playing in the SM-liiga with the HPK Hameenlinna. This season, Kiiskinen took a step back, finishing with 14 goals and 23 points in 46 games. Last season, Kiiskinen popped in his first year with Hameenlinna, scoring 14 goals and 44 points in 46 games. He tacked on six goals and seven points in seven games with Finland at the 2025 World Juniors.
The decline isn’t what you’re hoping for after such a strong season, but knowing he can put up near point-per-game numbers against men as a 19-year-old is worth noting.
Eddie Genborg
Gonberg was selected in the second round (44th overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft by the Red Wings. The 6’1″ winger had a strong draft year, scoring 19 goals and 34 points in 28 games with Linkoping HC of the Swedish Junior league. He played 28 games for the men’s team in the SHL, scoring two goals.
The 18-year-old switched teams for the 2025-26 season, now playing with Timra IK. With his new squad, Genborg has nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points, and a plus-seven rating in 36 games with Timra.
Hockey fans may recognize Genborg’s name from watching him play for Team Sweden at the most recent World Juniors, where he scored three goals and recorded eight points in seven games en route to a Gold Medal.
Brady Cleveland
Cleveland was selected in the second round (47th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Red Wings. The left-shot defenceman is a defensive defenceman through and through. And that is reflected in his point totals. Through his three seasons post-draft in the NCAA with the University of Wisconsin, Colorado College and the University of Minnesota Duluth, Cleveland has just one goal and four assists in 84 games.
However, his ability to use his 6’5″ length to keep forwards along the perimeter, his 220-lb frame to his advantage in board battles and his overall frame to land heavy hits, makes Cleveland a fitting prospect to be moved in a potential trade – especially for Tyler Myers.
*Note: DFO Rundown Insider Edition’s David Pagnotta shared on his Thursday hit on Sekeres & Price that the Red Wings’ offer was a second-round pick. We’ll have to wait and see if that holds true through the next few days.
A second-round pick for a 36-year-old defenceman would be a solid return. However, looking at defenceman trades this season, that wouldn’t be an outlandish return for Myers. Carson Soucy and Spencer Stastney, as left-shot defencemen who have not had the same prestigious NHL career as Myers, both went for third-round picks over the last three months.
Sure, Myers is a few years older, but as a right-shot, cost-controlled veteran defenceman, most Cup contenders are looking for players of that ilk. It wouldn’t be crazy to see that be the return for the veteran.
What do you think, Canucks fans? Who would you want to see the Vancouver Canucks acquire if they were to deal Tyler Myers to the Detroit Red Wings? Let us know in the comments below!
