On Wednesday afternoon, word broke via ESPN and NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes that the Vancouver Canucks have been “fielding plenty of calls” about defenceman Tyler Myers, and that the veteran defenceman “could be on the move soon.”
And not long after that, Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali — The Team, reported that Myers will be held out of tonight’s game against the Winnipeg Jets for trade-related reasons. Less than 15 minutes later, the Canucks themselves confirmed the report.
The Canucks welcome the Jets to Rogers Arena on Wednesday night for both club’s first game action since the Olympic break. While Myers skated on a pairing with Zeev Buium at today’s Canucks morning skate, it appears that PO Joseph — who skated as the lone extra defenceman this morning — will slot into the lineup in place of Myers.
In addition to Dhaliwal’s report, TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that the Canucks “have a trade option they’ve asked Myers to consider. He has protection and is taking his time to consider. I’m told it was presented two days ago. The veteran and his agent JP Barry continue to deliberate.”
This afternoon’s news comes as a bit of a shock, as Myers’s name hasn’t been apart of many trade rumours to this point in time. Myers — whose turned 36 earlier this month, has a young family, and lives in BC year-round. It didn’t really seem realistic that he would be willing to waive his no-movement clause to help the Canucks facilitate a deal, but with these reports, it seems that’s the direction this is headed.
What Myers should be able to do — if he chooses to waive, of course — is work with the Canucks on finding a destination that makes sense for him and his family, instead of being told where he’s going.
This is a developing story and we will update it as more information becomes available.
