Welcome back to our countdown of the top Vancouver Canucks news stories of 2024, where we will be counting down our most-read stories of the year in the days leading up to 2025.
Dubbed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster,” the Grouse Grind is a 2.9-kilometre trail up the face of Grouse Mountain. It has an 850-metre elevation gain and is not for the faint of heart.
It’s also one of the Vancouver Canucks’ favourite ways to test the fitness level of their prospects.
As has now become tradition, one of the Canucks’ off-ice activities during their yearly summer development camp is to have their prospects run up “the Grind.” It’s a fun and challenging activity for the players, and can tell you plenty about a player’s will, leadership qualities, and more.
It’s also a chance for Canuck legends Daniel and Henrik Sedin to show they still got it.
During the Canucks’ 2024 summer development camp run up the mountain, prospect Aiden Celebrini revealed that the twins finished the trail before anyone else.
“Oh yeah, actually behind the Sedins,” he said when asked if he was one of the first players to finish the trail. “They’re not human.”
Knowing the Sedins, they likely wouldn’t want to make headlines for something like this, but I’m almost certain that Daniel would want you to know he has a faster time up the Grind than Henrik does.
Daniel also did the Grind 11 times in one day in 2023 when he competed in the Multi-Grouse Grind Challenge with a final time of 10:08:18. Only one of his runs up the mountain lasted over an hour, while his fastest one was a little over 51 minutes, which was enough to help him finish 23rd in the challenge out of 70 participants.
