Welcome to our countdown of the top Vancouver Canucks news stories of 2024, where we will be counting down our most-read stories of the year in the days leading up to 2025.
It’s the pipe dream every Canucks fan has, and it’s one that even head coach Rick Tocchet might allow himself to entertain: trading for Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.
After all, Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin love to go out and acquire former Penguins players, so who better to keep that tradition alive and well with than Crosby?
Coming in at number ten on our countdown is when Rick Tocchet joked about the Canucks trading for the future Hockey Hall of Famer.
This story came in the lead-up to the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, when Tocchet was asked about his involvement in the Canucks’ Trade Deadline strategy.
“I think throughout the year, the communication’s been great. Patrik and I have a great relationship, we communicate. So he knows what we’re trying to do and I know what he’s trying to do. At this time of year, he’ll bounce some ideas, you know, they talk about players all the time, I mean, that’s their job. But most of the time, I just kind of worry about the players in my room right now.”
As a follow-up, Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre asked Tocchet a simple question: “Can he get Sidney for you?”
Resisting the urge to say, “I WISH, MAN!” (we assume), Tocchet responded with a big grin on his face: “I don’t want to tamper.”
That sure would be an interesting question to ask if we could give Tocchet some truth serum. I mean, who wouldn’t want Sidney Crosby on their team?
