Welcome back to our countdown of the top Vancouver Canucks news stories of 2024, where we will be counting down our most-read stories of the year in the days leading up to 2025.
If you’ve flown at least a handful of times, chances are high that you’ve experienced the inconvenience of a flight getting delayed or cancelled.
What you may not have experienced is getting stranded in Buffalo due to extreme winter weather. But that’s what every Canucks player and staff member on the road experienced in January of 2023, when the club’s chartered flight from Buffalo to Columbus was cancelled.
The team had just beaten the Buffalo Sabres by a score of 1-0 that afternoon, but when they got set to travel for their next game against Columbus, they were ordered to sit tight. The winter storm in question brought over two feet of snow to Buffalo and forced the NFL to postpone the Buffalo Bills’ AFC Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers by a day.
The Canucks weren’t the only NHL team whose travel was impacted by the inclement weather, either. The San Jose Sharks, who were originally scheduled to fly into Buffalo the same day the Canucks were set to leave, elected to spend another night in Ottawa before heading into Buffalo.
Eventually, the Canucks decided to bus to Toronto and fly out of Pearson Airport to Columbus. They went on to lose in a shootout, with the Blue Jackets winning 4-3.
Another thing that happened when this story came out nearly a full calendar year ago?
The Canucks sat at the top of the NHL overall standings following their win over the Sabres.
