June is a great time to be playing hockey if you are a National Hockey League team. Many happy hockey memories are made in the month of June. Even more sad ones. But we are not going to focus on those, that is no fun.
Looking back at the Vancouver Canucks playoff history, the past two days have been quite important. Yesterday on June 10, we got to watch Maxim Lapierre sneak a rebound past Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas for the lone goal in a Game 5 win that gave the Canucks a 3-2 series lead in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.
Today, it is another huge game in another Stanley Cup Final.
On this day in 1994, the Canucks defeated the New York Rangers at the Pacific Coliseum to even the series 3-3 and force a winner take all Game 7 back at Madison Square Garden.
Game 6 comes with a different type of pressure. One team is facing elimination. That pressure is ramped up even further when you are facing elimination against a team whose captain, Mark Messier, had just recently guaranteed a Game 6 win in the Eastern Conference Final and delivered.
After a huge win in Game 5, the Canucks knew they needed to get off to a hot start at home. And they did just that. Jeff Brown scored a power-play goal just under halfway through the first period and the Canucks took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
In the second, it was Geoff Courtnall who extended the lead to 2-0 with a nifty backhand in tight before Alex Kovalev gave the Rangers their own power-play goal to make it 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Who was going to be the hero? Well, there were two. Both wearing white sweaters with a yellow trim.
Brown scored his second goal of the game on a slap shot from the point at the 8:35 mark to give the Canucks a 3-1 lead that they would not relinquish. Courtnall added his second on a nearly identical backhand goal with 1:32 remaining and the Canucks held on for the 4-1 win to force Game 7. Canucks goalie Kirk McLean stopped 28 of 29 shots (.966 save percentage).
Unfortunately, the Rangers edged the Canucks 3-2 at home in Game 7 to win the 1994 Stanley Cup.
