Before coming to an agreement on a new contract with the Minnesota Wild in the summer, Marco Rossi was on the trade market, with the Vancouver Canucks one of the teams pursuing the centre.
There were rumours that the Canucks were interested in Rossi, with some reports that they had even sent the Wild a trade offer. We never truly knew what the offer was, but now we may have a better idea.
Michael Russo, who covers the Wild for The Athletic, talked about trade relations between Minnesota and Vancouver in an article on Monday, mainly regarding winger Kiefer Sherwood. But when discussing the asking price for Sherwood, which is reportedly a first-round pick and a roster player, he also mentioned it’s not far off from the type of offer the Canucks sent to the Wild when Vancouver was pursuing Rossi.
“Ironically, the Canucks turned down an offer from the Wild for Rossi at the draft that would have involved Aatu Räty [. . .], the No. 15 pick and goalie Artūrs Šilovs,” Russo said in his article.
This report lines up with reporting from CanucksArmy’s Irfaan Gaffar, who detailed this exact trade package — and that the Canucks declined — back in October.
Vancouver was in desperate need of another centre behind Elias Pettersson after trading J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers. In that trade, the Canucks acquired Filip Chytil, who had primarily served as a third-line centre. After rejecting the Wild’s trade proposal, the Canucks failed to acquire a centre through trade or free agency. Instead, they allowed Pius Suter to test the market and ultimately sign a two-year, $4.125 million AAV deal with the St. Louis Blues.
Rossi started his fresh three-year, $5 million AAV contract with a three-game point streak, scoring one goal and three assists. Through 17 games this season, the Austrian forward has four goals and 13 points. He has missed the last 12 games for the Wild with a lower-body injury. Rossi was ruled out for the Wild’s recent road trip, which included a 4-1 loss to the Canucks. Danila Yurov, the Wild’s 2022 first-round pick, has filled in for Rossi as the first line centre between Kirill Kaprizov and Mats Zuccarello.
