Even when celebrating with the team he works for these days, one of the best Vancouver Canucks of all time still loves the city he used to call home.
During the on-ice celebration following the Florida Panthers’ capturing the Stanley Cup for the second year in a row, beating the Edmonton Oilers once again, special assistant to the general manager, Roberto Luongo, was interviewed by Sportsnet’s Gene Principe, and the topic of Vancouver came up.
“I mean, I love Vancouver, too,” Luongo said.

The topic arose after Principe asked Luongo about his current relationship with Panthers forward, and former Boston Bruins captain, Brad Marchand. Many took notice earlier in the series after Luongo took to X after Marchand’s game-winning goal in double overtime of Game 2 against the Oilers.
It led the Hall of Fame goaltender to write, “Favorite player of all time.”
That led to many fans, Canucks supporters in particular, boiling in the idea that Luongo could ever be friends with Marchand after what happened during the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, which saw the Marchand’s Bruins take down the Canucks in one of the more memorable seven-game series in a long time.
Luongo, who banged the large bass drum to hype up the crowd before Game 6, says they’ve been able to put the past behind them, for the good of the team they’re both a part of these days.
“Obviously, we had our battles back with us 15 years ago,” Luongo said on Tuesday night. “We have to be able to move on. He’s a great player, obviously, and I’m an even better teammate. We’re just happy to have him on our team. Obviously, we saw what he did on this run. Not only on the ice, but in the locker room, on the bench, everywhere. He was a huge add to our team.”
Granted, that didn’t deter Luongo from taking a slight jab at Marchand later on. Following the 2011 win, Marchand and his teammates got tattoos to celebrate the occasion. However, instead of Marchand’s ink saying “champion,” it says “champian.” Lou used his social media presence to poke some fun at the veteran forward.
