It worked last year.
Ex-Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo took to X/Twitter on Monday afternoon to tease a return to the stands to bang the drum ahead of puck drop to fire up the crowd before Game Six of the Stanley Cup Final.
Luongo, who spent eight memorable seasons with the Canucks, typically wears a suit at Panthers games in his role as Special Advisor to GM Bill Zito, but wears a jersey for special occasions. Special occasions like last year, when Luongo came down from the press box to hype up the home crowd ahead of a pivotal Game Seven between the Oilers and Panthers.
Last year, the Panthers hosted Game Seven after nearly squandering a 3-0 series lead by allowing the Oilers to even the series up with three straight victories. Luongo’s drum banging clearly brought the Panthers some much-needed good fortune, as Florida captured its first Stanley Cup with a 2-1 victory over the Oilers.
This year, the Panthers finished lower in the standings than the Oilers did, meaning Florida returns home to host Game Six on Tuesday night. After losing Game One in Edmonton, the Panthers took Game Two and picked up a victory on home ice for Game Three. The Oilers took Game Four, but the Panthers took Game Five in Edmonton and now return home with a chance to close this one out on home ice.
If the Panthers win the Cup, they will be the first back-to-back Stanley Cup Champions since the Tampa Bay Lightning (2020 and 2021 Cup Champions).
As a player, Luongo spent five seasons with the Panthers before being traded to the Canucks in a blockbuster deal. Luongo rose to stardom with the Canucks, and was consistently one of the league’s best goaltenders every year of his career with the Canucks. He posted a .914 save percentage during the Canucks’ run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011 before falling to the Boston Bruins in seven games. After a trade back to Florida in 2014, Luongo closed out his career with six more seasons with the Panthers.
A first ballot Hockey Hall of Famer inducted in 2022, Luongo captured his first Stanley Cup last season as an executive.
And tomorrow, he’ll hope his drum banging is enough to make it two.
