We are back
with this week’s Comets Militia report, where we review all the latest
in news,
statistics, rumours, gossip and made up narratives regarding the
Vancouver Canucks
farm team: The Utica Comets.  The Comets continue their winning streak, as they look towards the Calder Cup, as they try and win out the West and aiming to catch up to Manchester for the Kilpatrick Trophy.
Read past
the jump to see how that went down.

The
Statistics

The Comets
continue to dominate as their win streak is nearing 10 games.  They have reclaimed first in the West and now
are the only team able to catch the Manchester Monarchs for the Kilpatrick
Trophy (AHL version of the Presidents Trophy).
While Utica is holding off Grand Rapids and San Antonio for the Western
Championship, don’t expect the recent additions to the team to see much ice time
this season.
It is quite interesting to see the perspective on the visual improvement of the club compared to last season.

Saturday’s 3-2 OT Win @ Hamilton

The week
started off with an Easter Weekend game in Hamilton where the Comets found
themselves trailing after the first.
They managed to tie up the game (twice) to send the game to OT where
Bobby Sanguinetti scored the game winner.
It was a close game but the Comets had the edge in PDO and in
possession.  Joe Cannata started the
weekend, he’s likely going to be a career minor leaguer, but he is a Canucks RFA
this summer and is having a career year for himself.  Ben Hutton was a healthy scratch in this game.

Tuesday’s
3-1 Win vs Hamilton

In their
second game of the week the Comets had a rematch against Hamilton – this time
it was the Bulldogs who had the possession edge but the Comets kept the
PDO.  Joacim Eriksson had a real good
game posting a Quality Start to
ensure the Comets walked away with two points.
Ben Hutton was back on the ice, the penalty kill remained perfect while
the power play continues to bat .000.

The Transactions

  • Sven
    Baertschi was recalled to Vancouver
  • Ashton Sautner
was signed to a PTO with the Comets (I called this last week)
  • Jacob
    Markstrom was returned to Utica
I would
expect Evan McEneny to be recalled to Utica and Jordan Subban to be shortly
signed to a PTO.  Patrick McNally watch
is still on.

The Schedule

An
interesting schedule coming up as the Comets play the last 4 of their 6 games
before going on a Calder Cup run.  All 4
games, including the back-to-back-to-back with travel for the second game, are
within the Empire Division.  The Comets
have had success against all three teams they will face this week which bodes
well as they make a final push for the Conference and League leaders.
