Another Sedin is set to play pro sports in Vancouver.
On Thursday, Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced the signing of Whitecaps FC BMO Academy midfield product Valter Sedin to a professional contract with Whitecaps FC 2, the reserve team for the main club. Valter Sedin is the son of former Vancouver Canuck Henrik Sedin and a growing prospect in the Canadian international youth system. He is signed in Vancouver through June 2028.
Valter Sedin joined the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy System in August 2020. He was part of the Whitecaps FC U-17 academy team that made the 2024 MLS NEXT quarterfinals, and made his professional debut as an academy call-up with Whitecaps FC 2 in June 2024.
This summer, the young Sedin represented Canada at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship, helping the nation qualify for the 2027 U-20 World Cup. It will be Canada’s first appearance at the tournament since hosting in 2007. Sedin scored a goal against Jamaica in the final group stage match of the CONCACAF U-20 Championship, helping the team finish atop their group.
“Valter grew through our academy program before testing himself in Sweden,” said Whitecaps FC sporting director Axel Schuster, per a team release. “He is a young player who has always had the right mentality, and he did very well in helping Canada qualify for the U-20 World Cup. We look forward to continuing to work with him in his development.”
The 19-year-old spent the last year in his father’s home country of Sweden, playing with Hammarby IF’s U-17 team. Now, he’s set to return to his hometown of Vancouver to play pro soccer.
“I’m excited to be back at the club and to sign a professional contract,” said Sedin, per the release. “I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my game, and to continue pushing forward in my career.”
Sedin is expected to be part of the Canadian group at the FIFA U-20 World Cup next year, which will be jointly hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Exact dates for the competition have not yet been confirmed. In the meantime, local fans can see Sedin in action with Whitecaps FC 2 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.
