Vancouver Canucks assistant general manager Derek Clancey has departed his position to join the Toronto Maple Leafs as their new assistant general manager, player personnel.

Clancey had been with the Canucks as an assistant general manager since December 15, 2021. The Canucks posted a statement attributed to general manager Patrik Allvin on Tuesday morning

“We would like to thank Derek Clancey for the work he has done for the Vancouver Canucks,” Allvin said. “We wish him nothing but the best as he starts a new chapter is his hockey career.”

Clancey will serve in the Maple Leafs front office under team president Brendan Shanahan and new general manager Brad Treliving.

“We are excited to add Derek to our hockey operations department,” Treliving said. “I feel Derek is one of the premier talent evaluators in our game. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and will play a big role as we continue our goal of building a championship team.”

Before joining the Canucks, Clancey worked as a pro scout with the Calgary Flames (with whom Treliving served as general manager) during the 2021–22 season.

Treliving and Clancey also played together in the IHL with the Columbus Chill during the 1990s. After retiring as a player in 1999, Clancey worked his way up from the ECHL to earn an NHL role with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007.

Clancey won the Stanley Cup three times (2009, 2016, 2017) while serving as a member of the Penguins front office between 2007 and 2021. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Clancey’s roles included pro scout, director of professional scouting, and director of player personnel.

With Clancey no longer in the fold, the Canucks are down to just two assistant general managers: Cammi Granato and Émilie Castonguay. Additionally, Ryan Johnson serves as an assistant to general manager Patrik Allvin and also manages the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks.
