The Abbotsford Canucks have added left-handed defenceman Andy Carroll on an amateur tryout agreement, the club announced Monday afternoon.

Carroll, 26, collected five goals and 25 points in 39 games as a fifth-year defender at Minnesota State University – Mankato during the 2022–23 season.

Additionally, his 20 assists ranked third on the Mavericks, behind only Jake Livingstone and Akito Hirose — both of whom are among the top undrafted NCAA free agents of this year’s class.

Carroll is a five-foot-ten defenseman from Northfield, Minn. who weighs 178 pounds. His deal with Abbotsford does not include any NHL provisions with the Vancouver Canucks.

Carroll joined the Mavericks in 2018–19 after one season with the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers. He gradually took on more of a role as a collegiate defender and helped the Mavericks capture two conference championships (2019 and 2022) during his tenure.

Over 170 games with the Mavericks over parts of five seasons, Carroll recorded 14 goals and 64 points. He finished with a +70 rating and 45 penalty minutes in his NCAA career.

Carroll joins an Abbotsford team that is looking to make some noise in the playoffs after being swept in the first round by the Bakersfield Condors last year. Abbotsford currently ranks third in the AHL Pacific Division with a 35–23–7 record and 77 points in 65 games this season.
