The NHL’s Friday Trade Deadline is fast approaching, and the rumours are flying in the lead-up to the big day. Plenty of Vancouver Canucks players have seen their names out there in trade discussions, and while obviously not every one of them will be traded, there’s no denying the Canucks have plenty of irons in the fire this week. As a result, 10 Canucks players are present on Daily Faceoff’s latest NHL Trade Board. Let’s dive into the names.
Evander Kane
If there’s one Canucks player who it’s felt like is a near-certainty to be traded ahead of Friday’s deadline, it’s pending UFA Evander Kane. Kane’s homecoming hasn’t exactly gone as planned, but the big forward, who turns 35 this summer, is likely eager to prove that he’s still capable of helping a team out when the games matter the most in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He obviously won’t get that opportunity if he’s not dealt, so it would be downright shocking for Kane to still be a Canuck beyond Friday.
Elias Pettersson (F)
This one is a bit more complicated, and IF the Canucks were to trade Elias Pettersson, it might make more sense for them to wait until the summer to do it. Would a team who is interested in trading for Pettersson ahead of Friday no longer be interested by the time the draft rolls around in June? Of course, the Canucks could very well elect to keep their $11.6 million man into next season and beyond as well. As we’ve heard already, his name is certainly being discussed, but actually executing a trade that makes sense is going to be complicated.
Teddy Blueger
Similar to Kane, Blueger is one of the Canucks’ UFAs who fans are expecting to be moved ahead of Friday’s deadline. Back at the 2023 deadline, Blueger fetched the Pittsburgh Penguins a third-round pick as the Vegas Golden Knights acquired Blueger to shore up their centre depth for their run to the Stanley Cup. Can the Canucks get similar value? How about a fourth or a fifth?
Tyler Myers
Tyler Myers has firmly found himself in Canucks trade rumours for deadline week, after the Canucks held him out of a game last week to preserve the asset ahead of the deadline. Reports indicate that Myers is mulling over whether or not he’s willing to waive his no-movement clause to facilitate a move to Detroit to join the Red Wings. Myers, 36, has one season remaining after this at $3 million.
Lukas Reichel
From Daily Faceoff:
The Canucks acquired Reichel from the Chicago Blackhawks in October, and the Canucks made him available for a trade by November. He’s running out of chances to translate his speed and skill into NHL production. Prospects of this ilk are common: your skill set only works on a scoring line, and if there are no opportunities there, your skill set doesn’t work on a depth line. It’s difficult for players like that to find homes at the NHL level. He passed through waivers unclaimed in December, which gives you a sense of how he’s valued around the league at the moment. He did arguably increase his worth with his two-goal showing for Germany at the Olympics, however.
David Kampf
David Kampf falls into a similar category as Teddy Blueger. Any team acquiring him is simply looking to increase their centre depth ahead of the playoffs. Now, there’s a bit of a caveat that every team had the chance to add him earlier this season when he was a free agent, but it was the Canucks who landed him at a cap hit of $1.1 million. Would a team be willing to give up an asset to add Kampf at the deadline?
Drew O’Connor
We’ve been suggesting for a while now that the Canucks should absolutely be looking to move out their leading scorer, Drew O’Connor. On Monday, David Pagnotta reported that the Canucks are in trade talks with multiple teams about O’Connor. Acquired in the disastrous move that saw the Canucks land and subsequently extend O’Connor and defenceman Marcus Pettersson in exchange for the first round pick they got in the JT Miller trade, O’Connor has played great for the Canucks this season, and they should absolutely be looking to turn that production into a future asset.
Jake DeBrusk
Jake DeBrusk’s name has also been out there ahead of this deadline, and all the losing seems to have really gotten to the typically upbeat veteran forward.
“I think a rebuild is hard for every player, but at the same point it’s a great opportunity for younger guys,” DeBrusk told The Province’s Ben Kuzma on Monday. “This game humbles everybody and it’s been a little bit more than humbling this year. Obviously, that (rebuild) is not something I would be okay with or accepting. My game doesn’t fit that.”
He may not have formally requested a trade, but that certainly sounds like a player who would be okay with a trade out of Vancouver.
Conor Garland
The Canucks should strongly consider moving out one of their veterans with term ahead of this deadline, and Conor Garland falls into that category of players. To add some urgency, Garland has a full no-move clause beginning July 1st, so the Canucks might choose to act fast in moving Garland out. On Monday, a report from rg.org’s Jimmy Murphy stated that the Boston Bruins were back in on Garland. In a post to X.com a few hours after his initial report, Murphy added, “Just got another call on this, and let’s say the [Bruins] have plenty of competition on Conor Garland.”
Brock Boeser
Also mentioned in Murphy’s report was Brock Boeser, although it does seem very unlikely that Boeser, who signed a seven-year contract with the Canucks this past offseason, will be moved. A report from TSN’s Darren Dreger suggested Boeser would be willing to waive his NMC for “the right fit”, and it’s believed that the list of teams that would be the right fit for Boeser is a relatively short one. Might it include the Boston Bruins?
