It is officially NHL Trade Deadline week, and a new name on the
Vancouver Canucks has surfaced in trade rumours.
According to the Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Canucks are in trade talks with teams surrounding forward Drew O’Connor.
O’Connor, 27, was acquired by the Canucks just over a year ago in the subsequent deal following the JT Miller trade to the New York Rangers. With the first-round pick acquired in that move, the Canucks packaged that along with forward Danton Heinen, defenceman Vincent Desharnais, and prospect Melvin Fernström in exchange for O’Connor and Marcus Pettersson.
In the 31 games post-trade, O’Connor scored four goals and five assists for nine points with a minus-two rating in 14:12 minutes of average ice time. The Chatham, New Jersey native made a strong first impression in Vancouver, scoring two goals in his first three games, including a penalty shot overtime winner against the San Jose Sharks.
Midway through last season, O’Connor signed a two-year, $5 million extension that carries a $2.5 million average annual value. Along with the raise, O’Connor was given a 12-team modified no-trade clause.
This season, O’Connor has been utilized up and down the lineup, and is a feature on the club’s penalty kill and just hit the 300 NHL game mark on Saturday against the Seattle Kraken. Through 59 games this season, O’Connor has scored 14 goals and eight assists for 22 points with a plus-four rating in 14:02 minutes per game. After the Kiefer Sherwood trade, O’Connor’s 14 goals now lead the team in goals – one ahead of Jake DeBrusk and Elias Pettersson.
The 6’4″, 209-lb winger now joins the lengthy list of Canucks players currently in trade rumours: Evander Kane, Teddy Blueger, David Kämpf, Tyler Myers, Brock Boeser, Conor Garland, Jake DeBrusk and
Elias Pettersson.Just five days until March 6’s NHL Trade Deadline, the Canucks will surely be busy, especially with Drew O’Connor now being a player of interest from other teams around the league.
