Vancouver Canucks draft pick Dmitry Zlodeyev scored a highlight-reel goal to give Team Russia a 2–0 lead over Switzerland in the first period of Monday’s round-robin game at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Zlodeyev’s first-ever WJC goal came off a commendable individual effort by the 19-year-old centre. He broke into the Swiss zone on the left side, eventually firing a shot toward the net from behind the goal line.

While Zlodeyev’s initial attempt caromed off the side of the net, he picked up his own rebound behind the goal before curling back up to the bottom of the right circle and firing another shot toward Swiss goaltender Kevin Pasche. That time, Zlodeye’s aim was true.

Ivan Didkovsky picked up the lone assist on Zlodeyev’s first goal of his first World Junior tournament.

The Canucks originally selected Zlodeyev in the sixth round of the 2020 NHL Draft. The 5’11”, 183-pound forward has three goals and seven points in 10 games this season with MHK Dynamo Moskva of the MHL, Russia’s junior league.

Russia currently leads Switzerland 3–1 in the second period. Danila Yurov and Pavel Tyutnev have the other goals for Russia; Attilio Biasca has the lone Swiss marker.
