Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko faced shots at practice on Sunday, as the club got right back to it after Saturday night’s 7-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night.
Demko has been skating on his own since training camp, and recently got on the ice with teammates during the Canucks’ recent California road trip. Today marked his first full practice, however, and we have video of Demko facing shots from today’s practice, courtesy of Jeff Paterson. See here:
Demko has been working his way back from what he called a “rare and unique” injury to his popliteus, a muscle behind the knee. Demko opened up about the frustrations amid a lack of answers or a clear timeline, given that he is among few athletes to sustain this type of injury.
“When I first felt the injury, obviously I wasn’t too sure what it was, but as we dived into some research and some things, it was a little bit ambiguous,” Demko said at training camp back in September. “It’s been a bit of a frustrating summer just trying to get some answers. Obviously we’ve talked to all the specialists we can around the world… and this is the information we’ve gathered. Myself, the staff, and the organization are fully confident that we’re on the right track.”
Demko suffered the injury in the dying moments of the Canucks’ game one matchup against the Nashville Predators in round one of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The injury came as a result of Demko dropping into the reverse VH — a movement to integrate to the post, and one Demko utilizes even more than most NHL goaltenders. Although it’s not shown in the video, Demko did do some post integration work today, which is a positive sign as he eyes a return in the coming weeks.
We will have more information coming about today’s Canucks practice in the coming hours, so keep it locked on CanucksArmy.com!
