Another player may be on the move for the Vancouver Canucks, as according to Stefen Rosner of NHL.com, The Hockey News and The Elmonters, the New York Islanders are in serious trade discussions with the Canucks.
I believe Tyler Myers has been discussed. He’s got a full NTC though so unclear at this moment. Believe NYI had discussions about Myers back at 2022 NHL Draft before a deal fell through on draft floor. #Isles
There are serious discussions happening between #Isles & #Canucks. Been told it's surrounding Garland. But was also told that it could be Garland +. We'll see how this plays out.
According to Rosner, winger Conor Garland is believed to be the centrepiece of the trade, but the Islanders could also be acquiring more in the deal. Defenseman Tyler Myers is also believed to have been discussed in the trade, but he has a full no-trade clause, so it’s far from a certainty that he’ll be included in the deal.
At this point in time, there’s no confirmation of who would be included in the deal from the Islanders in return for Garland and potentially Myers.
Garland was connected to the Boston Bruins on Monday, but Jimmy Murphy — the author of that report — chimed in on Rosner’s Islanders report on Tuesday, saying the following:
“As I wrote yesterday and confirmed again today, the [Bruins] circled back on Garland and Boeser, but I was just told that ‘there was just not a fit’ and Canucks turned to [the Isles]. I’m also told [the Red Wings] had talks on Garland as well. Not sure where that stands.”
Garland is in the final year of his five-year contract with a $4.95 million cap hit, but has a six-year extension with a $6 million cap hit set to kick in next season, a deal Garland and the Canucks signed on the first day of the 2025 free agency, well before the Canucks’ “rebuild” began.
Garland has had a bit of a down year with the Canucks, managing only seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points in 49 games. He’s on pace for just 37 points, which would be his lowest total since his rookie season in 2018-19.
Myers is in the second year of his three-year contract with a $3 million cap hit. He’s missed the last three games for the Canucks, as they’ve sat him for trade-related purposes as they’ve tried to facilitate a trade to move him to a team where he wants to be.
Myers has also struggled offensively with just one goal and seven assists for eight points in 57 games. While he’s not known for his offensive game at this stage of his career, that puts him on pace for 11 points, his lowest total in a full season in his career.
Should the Canucks and Islanders work out a deal, it would be the first time the two teams have made a trade since the Canucks sent Bo Horvat to the Islander for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty and a 2023 first-round pick, a pick which Vancouver then used to acquire Filip Hronek from the Detroit Red Wings.
UPDATE:
According to Rosner, Myers is not a part of a Garland trade to the Islanders.
I'm told that Myers is not part of the potential Garland deal with #Isles.
He adds that he believes the Islanders will not have to part with one of their first-round picks. Viewing a package surrounding a second-round pick and a prospect as the likely return.
