The Vancouver Canucks have traded defenceman Marcus Pettersson to the New York Rangers in exchange for a 2030 first-round pick.
Daily Faceoff Insider David Pagnotta first broke the news on Daily Faceoff’s free agency live special. A few hours later, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman had the return.
Pettersson, 30, has five years remaining on his contract that pays him $5.5 million annually. The 6’5″ defenceman waived his full no-movement clause to allow the trade to New York.
The Swede had a rough first year of the contract in Vancouver, having scored just three goals and 15 assists for 18 points. Pettersson’s defensive game fell off a tad, finishing with a minus-19 rating while logging 21:27 minutes of average ice time in all 82 games.
The Rangers have been busy this offseason. First, they made a big splash on draft day when they acquired Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for the 26th and 92nd overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, along with a 2028 first-round pick. The Golden Knights traded down from 26 twice, and selected Finnish defenceman Juho Piiparinen at 29th overall and centreman Benjamin Wilmott at 92.
Then, earlier on July 1, the Rangers acquired goaltender Joonas Korpisalo from the Boston Bruins for a fourth-round pick in 2028 and forward prospect Kalle Vǎisänen. They also made two other deals around the time of the Pettersson trade, sending centreman Vincent Trocheck to the Utah Mammoth for a defenceman Sean Durzi, centre prospect Cole Beaudoin, and a third-round pick in 2027, and shipping Will Borgen to the Boston Bruins for a second-round pick in 2027 and a third-round pick in 2028.
Just over a year after acquiring Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Canucks recoup the first-round pick they paid to acquire him. In that trade, the Canucks also received Drew O’Connor in exchange for forward Danton Heinen, defenceman Vincent Desharnais, prospect Melvin Fernstrom, and what ultimately became the 12th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
