It appears the Vancouver Canucks may start selling off some of their veteran players with term.
According to David Pagnotta on the Daily Faceoff Free Agency special live show, the Canucks and New York Rangers are working on a trade that would send defenceman Marcus Pettersson out East.
“The New York Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks have been discussing a trade involving Marcus Pettersson. He will have to waive to go to Manhattan. It’s not done yet; there are still some discussions taking place right now to finalize it. If it gets to the finish line, Marcus Pettersson will be heading to New York.”
As Pagnotta mentioned, Pettersson will have the final say, as he has a full no-movement clause for this season and next, and then it becomes a 15-team no-trade list for the final three years of the deal. His contract carries a $5.5 million average annual value.
Pagnotta added shortly after breaking the news that he believes Pettersson will waive his no-movement clause to go to New York. He later confirmed Pettersson is waiving his no-movement clause via social media.
Pettersson, 30, was acquired by the Canucks as a secondary trade following the JT Miller trade to the Rangers. The Canucks sent the first-round pick acquired in the Miller trade, along with forward Danton Heinen, defenceman Vincent Desharnais, and prospect Melvin Fernstrom to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Pettersson and Drew O’Connor.
The 6’5″ Swedish defenceman scored one goal and 11 points in 31 games for the Canucks following the trade. He followed that up with a rough season in the first year of his new contract, scoring three goals and 18 points with a minus-19 rating in all 82 games.
