The Vancouver Canucks have flipped defenceman Travis Hamonic to the Ottawa Senators, multiple reports confirmed Sunday.

According to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, the Canucks are re-acquiring their own third-round pick in the 2022 draft, all the while retaining no salary in the deal.

The haul for Hamonic is surprising, to say the least. He’s been in and out of the Canucks’ lineup all year long and at the start of the season, was a massive storyline.

Hamonic, 31, missed training camp and the start of the season due to a personal matter. He’s appeared in 24 games this year with the Canucks scoring three goals and seven points while blocking 55 shots.

The trade fully removes Hamonic’s $3-million cap hit and that’s simply the best part of this deal from the Canucks’ perspective. To get an asset back, let alone a third-round pick, is a big get for the team who may have been on the verge of healthy scratching Hamonic with Tucker Poolman returning from injury soon.

Hamonic had joined the Canucks ahead of the 2020 season signing a one-year, $1.25-million deal and didn’t look bad in his first year with the club. He had appeared in 38 games scoring three goals and 10 points, all the while playing 19:22 a night blocking 81 shots.
