In a season in which Braeden Cootes has already donned jerseys for the Vancouver Canucks, Seattle Thunderbirds, and Team Canada’s World Juniors squad, it looks like he might be adding a fourth to his collection in the near future.
According to a report from Rick Dhaliwal, the Canucks prospect is on the move from his current WHL team, the Seattle Thunderbirds, to the Prince Albert Raiders. Rick Dhaliwal first reported the news on Monday’s episode of Donnie and Dhali.
“I’ve been told this morning that Seattle will be trading Braden Cootes to Prince Albert, and he’s going to bring back as many as eight pieces,” said Dhaliwal.
Cootes, 18, began the season with a brief three-game stint at the NHL level before returning to the Thunderbirds, where he continued to show his potential. In the 17 games he suited up in, he has recorded 10 goals and 13 assists.
At the international level, Cootes continued to grow his stock, earning a spot on Team Canada’s World Junior Roster. Despite limited minutes, he found the scoresheet with a goal during a 9-1 rout of Denmark.
A move from Seattle, currently sitting in the basement of the Western Conference, to a Prince Albert Raiders team that sits just one point out of first place in the Eastern Conference, will surround Cootes with more elite talent than he is currently working with.
“He wants to be on a winner,” said Dhaliwal. “He wants to go to a team where he can practice with better players. He wants to go over and play in big games. He wants a deep playoff run. I think this is a good move for Braden Cootes and his camp.”
If reports are true, Prince Albert fans could see Cootes in their colours as soon as Friday, when the Raiders host the Swift Current Broncos and Edmonton Oil Kings in a back-to-back.
More to come.
