The Vancouver Canucks have recalled goaltender Aku Koskenvuo from the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League under emergency conditions.
Koskenvuo will join the National Hockey League club and participate in team practices while goaltender Kevin Lankinen is away representing Finland at the Winter Olympics. The Canucks made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon:
The 22-year-old Koskenvuo is in his first full professional season in North America after completing a three-year collegiate career at Harvard University. The 6-foot-4, 173-pound goaltender signed a two-year, entry-level contract with Vancouver following his junior season with the Crimson in 2025. During his college career, Koskenvuo appeared in 39 games, recording a 14-16-5 record with three shutouts.
Born in Espoo, Finland, Koskenvuo has represented his country internationally at multiple levels. He competed for Finland at the 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, where he was recognized as one of Finland’s Top Three Players at the tournament. He later appeared for Finland during the 2022–23 IIHF Under-20 World Championship, gaining additional experience in international play.
Koskenvuo was originally selected by Vancouver in the fifth round, 137th overall, of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Since turning professional, he has split time between the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL and the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL. He began the current season with Kalamazoo before being assigned to Abbotsford, where he has appeared in nine games. In those appearances, Koskenvuo has posted a 3.20 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage.
The Canucks currently have no indication that the emergency recall will extend beyond Lankinen’s Olympic participation, and Koskenvuo is expected to return to Abbotsford once the Lankinen becomes available. Finland will play Switzerland in the Quarterfinals on Wednesday at 9:10 AM Pacific Time.
In the meantime, the emergency recall provides the Canucks with short-term roster flexibility while Lankinen competes internationally. As the Olympic hockey competition enters its playoff round, additional assignments or roster moves may be required by the club as necessary based on team needs and availability.
