The Vancouver Canucks are expected to close out their schedule before the Olympic break without Filip Chytil in the lineup.
Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote confirmed Tuesday that Chytil is dealing with migraines, an update that naturally raises concern given his health history.
Chytil, who had only returned to action a few weeks ago, did not join his teammates for the third period of Vancouver’s 6–2 loss to the Utah Mammoth on Monday night in Salt Lake City. Shortly after, the Canucks confirmed that he would not be available for the remainder of the matchup. The Czech centreman played just 7:36 minutes of ice time, and finished with a minus-3 rating.
Following the loss, Foote initially described the issue as Chytil having “tweaked something,” which prevented him from finishing the contest. When pressed on whether the situation was head-related, Foote responded cautiously, saying, “I hope not.”
The timing is particularly disappointing given that Chytil was beginning to re-establish himself in the lineup. Through his limited action this season, the 26-year-old recorded three goals and zero assists, all of which came prior to suffering his head injury earlier in the year.
In his appearances, Chytil has averaged roughly 15 minutes of ice time per game, with most of that coming at even strength. Vancouver has used him primarily in a middle-six role since his return to action. Traditionally a centre, Chytil had been testing out playing the wing, playing with David Kämpf and Linus Karlsson. At Tuesday’s practice, Aatu Räty slotted back into the lineup in Chytil’s absence.
With just one game before the NHL Olympic break — Wednesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights — Chytil has been deemed unlikely for that match.
Instead, he will have over three weeks of time off to rest and recover in hopes of returning to action again on February 25, when the Canucks welcome the Winnipeg Jets to Rogers Arena.
