SURREY, BC — Vancouver Canucks players have already been back in town for a while now, and as you’ve seen on this site, there have already been plenty of quotes to chew on over the past few weeks.

But on Monday morning, the Canucks gathered at Northview Golf & Country Club in Surrey for the annual Jake Milford Charity Golf Tournament, which serves as the true (but unofficial) start to the Canucks’ season.

Later this week, the Canucks will head to Penticton, BC, as the club once again brings its training camp to the South Okanagan Events Centre. But before all that, here’s what we heard from Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, and Filip Hronek, all of whom spoke this morning at The Jake.

On the new young Canucks:

“It’s good. They’re fun to be around. It’s been good vibes, I think, since coming here skating. And yeah, the guys are excited to start with training camp.”

On his open and honest offseason conversations with Canucks GM Ryan Johnson, where Johnson stressed he wants Pettersson to “be himself”:

“No, it means a lot. I mean, RJ is someone I’ve known for a long time, and he’s always been a good guy for me. And it’s been good just talking about the future, what he wants to see from me, and he makes you feel good. I play my best when I just feel like myself, but he’s been good in that regard, and he just wants the best from you and wants everyone to be happy.”

On the Canucks adding veterans like Luke Schenn and Brendan Gallagher to help reshape the Canucks’ culture:

“I know Luke from the past. He’s such a good guy, and a lot of battles with Gallagher throughout the years, but it’s been really good spending time with them now and practicing with them. So yeah, I’m excited.”

On his role in reshaping the culture and setting the standard:

“Just be myself. Practice hard, play hard. Be vocal when I feel I want to be it, but yeah, I’m just excited to play hockey again… Me, Brock, and Demmer have been there the longest, so it’s up to us to set the standard of work and all those things.”

Now a married man, Brock Boeser caught up with media at the Milford.

“It was good, yeah. It was a busy summer, but it goes by fast, but happy to be back. Just seeing everyone show up early and start building that team chemistry, I think it’s important for us, especially with how young we are. We’ve had some fun the last couple of weeks skating together, and I think we’re all ready to get going.”

On the young players and expectations for the team:

“Those young guys, you know, they work hard, they come to the rink every day wanting to get better, and they’ve shown it. And, you know, we’ve had some team bonding stuff already and gotten together, so I think we’re a pretty tight group. I think it’s just a new chapter for our team, you know. As long as you’re coming to the rink every day wanting to get better, I think the management and Manny’s going to hold us all to a high expectation. I think they’re going to expect us to come to the rink every day working as hard as we can, and I think if you take it day by day, show up, stick together as a team, we could have a way better year this year.”

On the Canucks’ new management group and direction:

“First off, just great people in these positions and great hockey minds, so I think they’re definitely awesome people to have in these positions, but at the same time, I know they’re gonna expect a lot out of all of us. I have trust and faith in the hockey ops that they brought in, and they’re making moves for the future, and obviously, that’s what you have to do when you’re in a rebuild. So, you know, I have trust in them.”

On his relationship with RJ and the Sedins:

“I mean, me and RJ are pretty close. He’s been my development guy ever since college, so I know him really well. We chatted in the summer. A lot of trust. Like I said, I think first off they’re great people. You can go up and have a conversation with them and just be yourself, and I think that’s really important to have that connection. And secondly, I mean, I think they all know hockey. Obviously the Sedins know hockey, RJ knows hockey, Manny knows hockey, and I think it’s a great spot to be in.”

On his role in the culture reset:

“I definitely feel like a way older guy this year compared to last year, so [I want to] just be a guy that the younger guys can lean on and really try to set an example. Whether I’m having guys over for dinner or whatever it is. Yeah, I’m just trying to be, you know, a veteran now.”

On early impressions of the new Canucks group:

“A lot of fun so far. The spirits are great, so we’re having a lot of fun and enjoying the last couple days. I think the biggest thing is everyone is in a good mood and ready to get going, and I’m really excited about it.”

On being a leader and helping out the young defencemen like Zeev Buium and Tom Willander:

“I think just lead by example and try to help the younger guys, but the biggest thing is just lead by example. They’re great guys, and they’re listening and trying to get better, and they did the same over the summer, so I’m really excited about that.”

On staying committed to the Canucks:

“I committed here and signed a contract here, and I knew I wanted to be here, and I’m excited for it. Obviously winning is really important, but I just don’t want to run away right away. So I think we can build something special here, and that’s the goal.”
