After a team day off Friday, the Vancouver Canucks returned to the practice ice with an hour-long session at UBC on Saturday morning.
In an effort to find an end to the team’s nine-game losing skid, head coach Manny Malhotra once again juggled his forward lines and defence pairings ahead of Sunday’s game against Quinn Hughes and the Minnesota Wild.

What we saw

Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser found themselves reunited on a line with Drew O’Connor while Brendan Gallagher skated on the right side with Marco Rossi and Jake DeBrusk. Liam Ohgren, a healthy scratch on Thursday against Detroit, was placed on a line with Filip Chytil and Jonathan Lekkerimaki while Max Sasson skated between Paul Cotter and Linus Karlsson. Arshdeep Bains worked in to some of the drills, but appeared to be the extra forward.
On defence, it looks like veteran Jamie Oleksiak may be coming out of the line-up on Sunday. Not only was he paired at practice with Victor Mancini, but during special teams work Oleksiak took a knee in the neutral zone while others worked on power play and penalty killing.
If Oleskiak sits for a second time this season, Guillaume Brisebois would presumably take his spot. Brisebois skated alongside Luke Schenn at practice while Elias Pettersson was paired with Filip Hronek and youngsters Zeev Buium and Tom Willander spent Saturday’s practice together.
Coming off a 5-2 loss to Detroit in which the Canucks didn’t register a shot in the second period and managed a season-low 13 on the night, the Canucks spent much of practice working on breakouts and having players get to the net. The tone of practice was firm, but by no means was it any kind of punishment for Thursday’s performance.
As the Canucks filtered off the ice at the end of the session to screams from young fans in attendance at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, Luke Schenn headed down the tunnel to the locker room with his teammates. But Schenn’s day was not done. The veteran blueliner grabbed a handful of Halloween candy being used as a prop by the club’s social media department and distributed it to the fans leaning over the railing. The gesture was well received.

What we heard

Manny Malhotra on what he saw from his players Saturday in the wake of a sluggish performance in Thursday’s 5-2 loss to Detroit: “Just a spirited response. We are very aware of what we didn’t do well last game structurally. More importantly, the response in terms of the energy that we bring to that game (Sunday) needs to be a lot better.”
Malhotra on what he’s looking for by putting Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser together: “The messaging for our entire group, not just the two of them, is that we need a response from you. We need to see your best game out on the ice. And those two, being two of our leaders, I think they got the message loud and clear.”
Centre Elias Pettersson on the return of Quinn Hughes on Sunday: “I’m sure it’s a lot of emotions for him coming back to where he played for years. It will be good. And hopefully we can come up with a win.”
