It’s the question on everyone’s mind, especially after seeing what Ottawa Senators fans had in store for Brady Tkachuk earlier this week.
What kind of reception will Quinn Hughes get on Sunday when he returns to Rogers Arena for the first time since the Vancouver Canucks traded him to the Minnesota Wild?
The Scale of Hatred for ex-players
Ex-players obviously receive different levels of vitriol when they return to the building they once called home.
There’s what John Tavares got when he returned to New York for the first time as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs after leaving the Islanders. Fans threw plastic snakes on the ice, booed his tribute video, and booed anytime he touched the puck.
Then there’s what we saw Senators fans dish out to Brady Tkachuk this week: they booed his tribute video, booed him during warmups, and came up with some very creative chants throughout the game.
Which is worse? It’s tough to say, but those are both toward the extreme end of the reception a player can expect.
A more common occurrence is what we’ve seen recently in Vancouver for JT Miller, and even Bo Horvat. For those two, fans cheered for the tribute video but booed anytime those players had the puck on their stick.
There’s little doubt that Hughes will get booed anytime he touches the puck on Sunday, and given how often the puck is on his stick, fans in attendance better bring a pack of cough drops with them!
So the question really becomes, how will fans react to Hughes’s tribute video? With cheers? Boos? A mix of both? And how will they react when the puck isn’t on his stick? Will we see chants like we did in Ottawa? It makes Sunday’s matchup all that more interesting, as it’s been a while since the fans in attendance were such a big story in the leadup to a game at Rogers Arena.
There’s no doubt Hughes is the best defenceman to ever lace up for the Canucks. The only Norris Trophy winner in the franchise’s history, Hughes holds several Canucks records, including most points, assists, power play points, multi-point games, and single-season points among defencemen.
His exit last season, however, left a sour taste in Canucks fans’ mouths, as the captain made it abundantly clear with his play on the ice towards the end of his Canucks tenure that he had no interest in being part of any solution in Vancouver. Combine that with not much to say about his time as a Canuck — or as the captain — following the trade, and Canucks fans aren’t very pleased with Quinn Hughes these days. And of course, the gold medal Hughes won in the Men’s Ice Hockey Final vs. Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics doesn’t help matters either.
So it remains to be seen to what extent the Canucks fans in attendance will make their voices heard on Sunday.
To close, we’ve got two questions for the comments section. The first: How do you think Quinn Hughes should be received when he returns to Rogers Arena on Sunday?
The second: How will Quinn Hughes be received on Sunday?
