The Vancouver Canucks cannot seem to avoid the injury bug this season.
Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced on Monday afternoon that forward Brock Boeser and defenceman Zeev Buium have been placed on injured reserve retroactive to January 25. In the same move, the Canucks have summoned forward Jonathan Lekkerimäki and defenceman Victor Mancini as their replacements.
Boeser, 28, was injured late in Sunday’s contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins when Bryan Rust caught him with a vicious elbow to the head in the dying seconds of the game. The Burnsville, Minnesota, native was finding his scoring touch again, having scored in back-to-back games heading into yesterday’s match. On the season, Boeser has 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points and is tied with Calgary Flames’ Mackenzie Weegar for the league-worst minus-30 rating on the season.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has scheduled a hearing with Rust for tomorrow morning, which many are speculating will be followed by a suspension.
Buium, 20, was also injured against the Penguins. In the first period, Buium took a puck to the face and was forced to leave the game. He returned in the second period and finished the contest, but was sporting a bubble cage. Earlier on Monday, TSN’s Darren Dreger mentioned that Buium could miss somewhere between 10 days and two weeks. With the San Diego, California native now on IR, he will be available to return on Monday, February 2, against the Utah Mammoth.
Lekkerimäki, 21, will replace the goal-scoring profile of Boeser. Since the demotion to the American League, Lekkerimäki has had no problems scoring. In 16 games in Abbotsford, the Swede has 10 goals and six assists for 16 points. Lekkerimäki has increased his shot volume as well, averaging 3.8 shots on goal per game.
Mancini, 23, has been up and down with Vancouver all season. In 24 AHL games this season, Mancini has two goals and six assists for eight points with a minus-three rating. The Hancock, Michigan native is still searching for his first point of the season, and has a minus-five rating through his nine NHL games this season.
Canucks are back in action on Tuesday when they welcome North Vancouver’s Macklin Celebrini and the San Jose Sharks to Rogers Arena.
