When the Vancouver Canucks sent out their memo to the 31 other NHL teams making it clear that they were open for business, one name immediately began popping up more than any other: Kiefer Sherwood.
Sherwood, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, is on pace to set a new career-high in goals, just like he did last season when he scored 19 in 78 games. Sherwood, who has always brought a physical and in-your-face style of play that teams absolutely adore, has found a new level in Vancouver, and the timing couldn’t be better for him personally. As a result of his newfound point-producing ability — and staying true to his truculent style of play — Sherwood has quickly emerged as one of the top names in what’s set to be a rather weak UFA class in 2026.
To put it simply: Sherwood is going to get paid. And he’s going to get paid a lot.
As a result, it makes sense for the Canucks, who currently sit 30th in the NHL standings and have a stated goal of getting younger, to want to get something for a player it doesn’t make a ton of sense for them to re-sign at this juncture.
Unsurprisingly, Sherwood has garnered a ton of interest around the league. With plenty of teams still in the mix and few clear sellers having yet emerged, there is a limited amount of supply to choose from for teams interested in getting better via trade. The two teams that have reportedly checked in with the Canucks about Sherwood so far are the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers.
And on Tuesday, The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline reported that the Columbus Blue Jackets have spoken to the Canucks about a trade for Sherwood as well. Here is what Portzline wrote:
“The Blue Jackets are among the clubs that have spoken to the Vancouver Canucks about trade scenarios, including a trade that could bring forward Kiefer Sherwood home to Columbus. Sherwood, 30, has emerged as one of the NHL’s top power forwards over the past few seasons and is an unrestricted free agent this summer. He leads Vancouver with 12 goals after scoring a career-high 19 last season. The Canucks, who notified all 31 clubs last week that they are open for business, are looking at major changes this offseason. One other club to watch here is Boston, and the Bruins have a big fan of Sherwood already in their dressing room: Sean Kuraly, another Columbus native, has been friends with him for years.”
On top of the Blue Jackets, you can also add the Minnesota Wild and Montreal Canadiens to the list of potential suitors for Sherwood, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.
“I’m told there is lots of interest in Sherwood, but I also know that Vancouver is not in a rush, that they want to get a full read on the market and understand what’s out there for them. Among the teams that I believe have inquired, one is the Minnesota Wild. That makes sense, they’ve been looking at top six options. I think the Montreal Canadiens have at the very least picked up the phone to see what was going on there… I will say this too, that I think that, in a perfect world, the Canucks get a young player back if they ever decide to go down this road as opposed to just a futures deal; not easy to do with a pending UFA, but that’s something else to keep in mind as well.”
