Some updates on the Vancouver Canucks‘ goaltending situation, as the team has had to make a roster adjustment.
According to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie & Dhali – The Team, goaltender Nikita Tolopilo is flying home to be with his wife, who is currently in labour. In response, the Canucks are calling up fellow netminder Jiri Patera from the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks.
Tolopilo was called up last week from Abbotsford on an emergency basis and ended up starting a couple of games. After picking up a win in a 37-save performance against the Anaheim Ducks last Wednesday, the 25-year-old gave up three goals in a loss to the San Jose Sharks on Friday night.
In four career games with the Canucks, Tolopilo has a record of 2-2-0, with a 2.97 goals-against average and a .890 save percentage.
This isn’t the first time Patera has been recalled by Vancouver. Due to Thatcher Demko’s health woes, the Czech backstop started against the Florida Panthers on Nov. 17. Things didn’t go so well, as Patera allowed seven goals on 40 shots in an 8-5 loss to the defending Stanley Cup champions. He was also briefly called up last week on emergency conditions after Kevin Lankinen didn’t travel with the team to start its four-game road trip due to personal reasons.
Patera’s numbers with the Abby Canucks have been decent. In six games, he has a record of 2-2-2 with a 2.89 GAA and a .899 SV%. In nine career NHL games, eight of which have come with the Vegas Golden Knights, the 26-year-old has a 3-4-1 record, with a 4.01 GAA and a .892 SV%.
Speaking of Demko, Dhaliwal also reported that he didn’t travel with the team during its current road trip and is currently rehabbing in Vancouver. Head coach Adam Foote told reporters a little over a week ago that the former Vezina finalist would be on the road with the team.
The Canucks were hoping Thatcher Demko would join the team on the road but he did not. He continues to rehab at home. Nils Hoglander has joined the team on the road but is not close yet.
Demko hasn’t played since he was hurt against the Winnipeg Jets last month and was later placed on injured reserve. In 10 starts this year, the 29-year-old is 5-4-0 with a 2.80 GAA and a .903 SV%.
The Canucks (10-13-3) are scheduled to visit the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.
