The Vancouver Canucks will be without their top two starting goaltenders for their upcoming road trip.
General Manager Patrik Allvin announced on Tuesday morning that goaltender Kevin Lankinen will not travel with the team on the road trip due to personal reasons. Jiri Patera has been recalled under emergency conditions.
Lankinen has carried the load in goal for the Canucks over the past 20 days. He’s appeared in all but four periods over that nine-game stretch. He started back-to-back games against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche two weekends ago before coming in relief for an injured Thatcher Demko in the second period. Coming in cold, Lankinen stopped 20 of 21 shots he faced, finishing with a 1.67 goals against average and a .952 save percentage.
The Finnish netminder has struggled compared to last year’s numbers, carrying a 4-7-2 record, a 3.63 goals against average and a .880 save percentage, and is still in search of his first shutout on the season.
Patera was sent down to the Abbotsford Canucks on Monday morning, in a move that saw a now healthy Nikita Tolopilo get recalled. Making his first NHL start in over 600 days, Patera was thrust in the net against the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champions with a team that had just played the night before in front of him. The Czech netminder allowed seven goals on 40 shots, finishing with a 7.50 goals against average and a .825 save percentage.
In the AHL, Patera has posted a 1-2-1 record with a 3.10 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage through his four starts this season.
The Canucks will now have Tolopilo and Patera tend the crease for the four-game road trip, with visits to play the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche before returning to Vancouver for a game next Friday against the Utah Mammoth. Foote shared yesterday that Demko will travel with the team on the road trip, but he is still without a timeline for his return.
We wish all the best to Lankinen.
