Two players on the Vancouver Canucks’ roster are set to represent their countries on the biggest stage in sports.
On Friday, the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation released its men’s roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Of the 25 players set to represent their country in Italy, Canucks centre Elias Pettersson is expected to make the trip as well.
Pettersson is one of 19 players who also played for Team Sweden at last year’s 4 Nations Faceoff. The Sundsvall native played in all three round-robin games, but failed to register a point. The Swedes managed to place third in the tournament, with their only win coming against rival Finland.
EP40 has played for his country on multiple occasions, though last February’s event marked the first time he donned the blue and yellow in almost six years. Pettersson has appeared in two IIHF Men’s World Championships, helping Tre Kronor win gold in 2018. That year, he won silver at the IIHF World Junior Championship, his second appearance at the WJC. Pettersson also won silver at the 2016 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship and the 2015 Hilnka Gretzky Cup.
Pettersson is having a relatively solid season in Vancouver, despite the team struggling to find success and stay in the postseason hunt. In 31 games, the 27-year-old has notched nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points, leading the Canucks in scoring, just ahead of defenceman Filip Hronek.
In the “NHL era” of Olympic hockey, Sweden has one gold medal to its name during that time, earned in 2006, the last time the Winter Games were held in Italy. Tre Kronor missed out on the medal table in 1998, 2002, and 2010.
Sweden will start off its Group B schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 11, taking on host Italy, before taking on the Finns and Slovakia later in the group stage. The playoffs will begin on Feb. 17, with the gold medal game taking place on Feb. 22.
Additionally, Canucks goaltender Kevin Lankinen was named to Finland’s roster this morning. Lankinen, who got into two games during last year’s 4 Nations Faceoff, is one of three goaltenders Finland named to their roster, along with Nashville’s Juuse Saros and Buffalo’s Ukko-Pekka-Luukkonen.
Finland won gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, a tournament that did not feature NHL players, and will feature a roster similar to the one it iced at the 4 Nations Face-Off this past February.
