Hours after three more Vancouver Canucks were named to their respective Olympic teams for the 2026 Winter Games in February, we hear that goaltender Thatcher Demko is on Team USA’s injury list.
Donnie & Dhali’s Rick Dhaliwal shared the news on his show on Tuesday morning:
“By the way, [there were] serious discussions with the US about Demko; they just couldn’t overcome the injury situation. But I’ve been told he’s on a list. He’s the number one guy. If there’s an injury for the US goalies, Demko is going to be the first call-up. So he’s on a list. He’s not disregarded just because he didn’t make the team.”
Don Taylor discussed that Sam Bennett and Seth Jarvis had both been informed that they are the first on Team Canada’s injury list, to which Dhaliwal replied:
“Same as Demko. He’s been told that he’s on a list and he’s going to be called up if there’s a problem.”
Demko, 30, has an 8-8-1 record with a 2.72 goals against average and a .906 save percentage this season, with one shutout. Before Team USA’s selection committee solidified their picks, Demko was having his most solid stretch of hockey of the year.
In mid-December, Demko posted a three-game stretch in which he won all three contests, allowing just two goals and finishing with a .973 save percentage over that span. However, since then, Demko has dropped all four of his starts, averaging four goals against per game and a .887 save percentage.
The San Diego, California, native netminder was not named to Team USA’s 4 Nations Faceoff roster last season. Instead, the Americans brought Connor Hellebuyck, Jake Oettinger and Jeremy Swayman as their three goaltenders. The same trio was named to the USA’s Olympic team, but if an injury occurs, Demko appears to be the injury replacement.
If Demko is named, he will join teammates Elias Pettersson, Kevin Lankinen, Filip Hronek, David Kämpf and Teddy Blueger as Canucks at the Olympics, and Quinn Hughes and JT Miller as ex-teammates on Team USA.
