On Tuesday morning, a trio of Vancouver Canucks players have been named to their respective countries’ Winter Olympic rosters:
Defenceman Filip Hronek and centreman David Kämpf were announced to Team Czechia, while Teddy Blueger was named to Team Latvia.
Hronek, 28, is stringing together a very strong season, especially stepping up since his long-time defensive partner Quinn Hughes was traded. Hronek currently shares a tie for the team lead in points (25) with Elias Pettersson.
The Hradec Králové, Czechia native has represented his country multiple times. Hronek played for the U18 team in 2014-15, at the U20 World Juniors in 2015-16 and 2016-17, and at the World Championships in 2017-18, 2018-19, 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2024-25. Last year, Hronek donned an A on his sweater, where he collected six assists and a plus-eight rating in eight games.
Kämpf, 30, wanted out of Toronto so he could have a shot to play in the NHL to make the Czech Olympic team – and it paid off. The defensive-minded forward has been a strong faceoff-taker and penalty killer since joining the Canucks, adding two goals and three points through 20 games this season.
Like Hronek, the Chomutov, Czech native has often represented his nation. Kämpf played for the U18 team in 2012-13, at the U20 World Juniors in 2013-14, and 2014-15, and at the World Championships in 2021-22, 2023-24, and 2024-25.
The two played together at the World Championships in 2021-22 – where they captured bronze, Czechia’s first medal at the tournament since 2012 – and 2024-25.
Anaheim Ducks defenceman Radko Gudas will join Hronek as the only NHL defenceman on Czechia’s blueline. Radek Faksa (Dallas Stars), Tomas Hertl (Vegas Golden Knights), Martin Necas (Colorado Avalanche), Ondrej Palat (New Jersey Devils), David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha (Boston Bruins) join Kämpf as NHLers in the forward group.
Blueger, 31, has played just two games this season for the Canucks, and hasn’t since October 19. The centreman has joined the team on their current six-game road trip, indicating his return is imminent, and with plenty of time to get back into game shape before the Olympics in February.
The Riga, Latvia native has played for his country a ton. Blueger played for the U18 and U20 teams in 2011-12, just the U20 team in 2012-13 and 2013-14, and for the World Championships in 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19, and wore the C for Latvia’s Olympic Games Qualifiers. As the Captain, Blueger scored two goals and four points in three games.
Former Canuck Arturs Silovs was also named, along with Rodrigo Abols (Philadelphia Flyers), Zemgus Girgensons (Tampa Bay Lightning), Uvis Balinskis (Florida Panthers), and Elvis Merzlikins (Columbus Blue Jackets), as the only other NHLers selected to Team Latvia.
With this trio being named to their Olympic rosters, they join Elias Pettersson and Kevin Lankinen as the five Canucks who will represent their countries at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
