A pair of Vancouver Canucks have been added to their preliminary Olympic expanded roster.
NHL Insider Frank Seravalli reported that Canucks’ Thatcher Demko and Brock Boeser – along with Montreal Canadiens defenceman Lane Hutson – were the three players added to Team USA’s preliminary Olympic roster.
Demko, 29, has appeared in two games this season. He has a 1-1 record, with a 1.54 goals against average and a .944 save percentage. His performance against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night kept his team in the fight, as he stopped 34 of 36 shots he faced.
The San Diego, California native represented his country at the World Junior Championships from 2012 to 2015. Demko started for the U18 team in 2012-2013, finishing with a 3-3 record, a 2.24 goals against average, and a .899 save percentage. His efforts were enough for Team USA to earn the Silver Medal. In 2013-2014, Demko served as a backup for Jon Gillies on the U20 team. He would not see game action. Demko returned the following year as USA’s starter. He finished with 1.74 goals against average and a .934 save percentage in his four outings.
Boeser, 28, has scored two goals through three games this season. He is two years removed from a 40-goal, 76-point campaign in 2023-24. The Burnsville, Minnesota native represented USA at the U20 World Junior Championships in 2015-16. In seven games, he scored one goal and two assists for three points.
Neither player participated in late August’s Olympic orientation camp. However, captain Quinn Hughes and World Championship standout Conor Garland attended. Hughes was listed as one of the first six players (Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, Matthew Tkachuk, Brady Tkachuk and Charlie McAvoy) named to the roster back in mid-June.
Demko and Boeser will now join Garland as hopefuls to represent Team USA in Milan this February. The final preliminary rosters will consist of 22 skaters and three goaltenders, and must be submitted by December 31, 2025. Canucks fans will have to wait until New Year’s Eve to find out if any of Hughes’ teammates will join him on Team USA.
