Welcome back to Blackfish: our weekly Vancouver Canucks prospect report.

By this time next week, we will have had actual Canucks hockey to talk about. Until then, we must continue to grind through the wonderful world of preseason hockey.

But there is one exciting thing we can talk about: Blackfish: The Prospect Show is going live.

That’s right, you can now catch Tyson Cole, Dave Hall and producer Jacob Fraser live every Monday at 11 a.m., where we’ll break down everything happening within the Canucks’ prospect pipeline.

With that shameless plug out of the way, let’s get into what was a relatively quiet week around the prospect world.

Brooks Rogowski continues to enjoy a productive preseason with the Oshawa Generals.

Through four games, he’s collected five points — three goals and two assists — while continuing to provide some encouraging results in the faceoff circle, winning 59.4 percent of his 69 draws.

Meanwhile, B.C. fans got an opportunity to see a Canucks netminder in action, as Aleksei Medvedev and his London Knights travelled to Victoria for the first annual “Clash of the Kingdoms.” Unfortunately, it was a slightly forgettable showcase for the Knights’ starting netminder.

Medvedev made some saves, but ultimately surrendered four goals on 16 shots through just 22 minutes of action in the opening game. Granted, he wasn’t given much help from a defensive perspective, but it still wasn’t the showing he would have hoped for coming off a disappointing draft-plus-one season.

The good news is that he responded with a much stronger performance the following night. Splitting duties in Game 2, Medvedev stopped 12 of the 13 shots sent his way, providing a slightly more stable showing to close out his weekend on Vancouver Island.

And that should do it for the CHL kids for now, as attention shifts toward the Canucks’ upcoming Prospect Showcase against the Seattle Kraken prospects. Vancouver has yet to announce its roster, but we expect all four of the organization’s CHL prospects — Rogowski, Medvedev, Adam Novotný and Lucian Bernat — to participate.

Over in Russia, Dmitri Ivchenko made his first regular-season start following a tremendous preseason slate. Unfortunately, he couldn’t turn it into a win, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision while making 18 saves.

As we’ve mentioned previously, we anticipate Ivchenko receiving the bulk of the starts in the MHL this season. From there, we’ll be watching closely to see whether he can work his way up the organizational ladder and potentially even sniff some KHL action. For now, though, the important thing is volume. After putting together strong numbers in a limited role last season, this year should finally give us a much better indication of what Vancouver has in its young Russian netminder.

Unfortunately, the roster likely won’t include the bulk of Vancouver’s higher-profile prospects, as much of the remaining top crop is NCAA-bound and still waiting for their seasons to begin.

Beyond the CHL names mentioned above, we anticipate players such as Riley Patterson, Gabriel Chiarot and Vilmer Alriksson being involved. Heck, we may even see Tom Willander attend, similar to Elias Pettersson taking part in last year’s event despite already having NHL games under his belt.

And perhaps — just perhaps — we get another look at a healthy Jonathan Lekkerimäki.

At this point, that alone would give us plenty to talk about next week, both in writing and on our LIVE SHOW AT 11:00 a.m. on MONDAY.
