It’s unknown whether Sasson will be in the lineup for the Canucks visit with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night. At this point of the season, many players are battling ailments, including Conor Garland, who didn’t play last Tuesday against the Winnipeg Jets with an undisclosed injury.
Sasson is still in the midst of his rookie season with the big club. He made his NHL debut on Nov. 23, picking up an assist in a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators. In fact, the Birmingham, Michigan native picked up points in each of his first two games with Vancouver.
Sasson ended up appearing in 24 games from late November to late January, potting two goals and four assists for six points, registering a plus/minus of +3 while averaging a hair over 10 minutes of ice time per game. His first NHL goal came in the Canucks’ 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Dec. 14.
The former Western Michigan University star last saw action with Vancouver on Jan. 27, when the Canucks defeated the St. Louis Blues.
Though he’s been in the minors, that hasn’t stopped Sasson from being the dynamic prospect Canucks fans have grown to know. Since Feb. 23, the 24-year-old has posted 13 points in 11 games, scoring last Saturday against the Manitoba Moose.
In 37 games with Abbotsford, Sasson has scored nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points, a little off the pace he was on during his rookie year in the AHL, in which he notched 42 points in 56 games.
In 100 career appearances with Abbotsford, Sasson has posted 28 goals and 42 assists for 70 points, including four points in 12 Calder Cup Playoff games.
Dating back to his time with the Broncos and in junior hockey, Sasson has utilized his speed to make him a solid offensive weapon, which has carried over into the pro game.
The Canucks (34-26-12) could use some of that at the point of the season. Sitting fourth in the Pacific Division, they are five points back of the Blues for the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
