He Vancouver Canucks general manager continued his recent parade of interviews with local media members by sitting down for a Q+A with Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre during the YoungStars Classic in Penticton over the weekend.
Boeser, whose status as a pending UFA has already garnered plenty of discussion and attention nearly a full year before his contract expires, is coming off a career-best year in which he racked up 40 goals and 73 points in 81 games.
On the heels of an interview with Thomas Drance in which he said he wants Boeser to become “even more consistent” in 2024-25, Allvin admitted to MacIntyre that the Canucks will have to make a decision on how to handle the 27-year-old winger before the 2025 trade deadline.
MacIntyre: What about Boeser, who is in the final year of his contract?
Allvin: Brock, first and foremost, we’re really pleased to see him trending towards being cleared and healthy here (after developing blood clots during the playoffs). And I’m glad for him that everything has gone well. That being said, I’m expecting him to continue where he finished off last year, find the consistency and play good hockey for us. I have a good relationship with his agent, Ben Hankinson, and we’ll see when the time is right.
MacIntyre: But you have to make a decision before the trade deadline, right?
Allvin: Yeah.
The Canucks originally selected Boeser with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. The 6’1″ right wing enjoyed a stellar tenure at the University of North Dakota before turning pro with the Canucks in 2017.
After an excellent start to his NHL career in Vancouver, Boeser endured a bit of a downturn in the early 2020s amidst a series of health issues and family tragedies. However, the Burnsville, Minnesota product enjoyed a resurgent season last year, finishing fourth on the Pacific Division-winning Canucks in scoring.
Boeser’s current contract, which he signed on Canada Day in 2022, carries a $6.65 million cap hit. He is the only core piece of the Canucks’ roster whose existing deal is slated to expire in 2025.
The Canucks are scheduled to kick off the 2024-25 regular season when they take on the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena on October 9.
