The IIHF World Championships are less than a week away, and Team Canada shared who will make up their leadership group for the event.
North Vancouver’s own Macklin Celebrini will don the ‘C’ for Canada, with Ryan O’Reilly and John Tavares serving as his assistants. Celebrini wore an ‘A’ on his sweater with the San Jose Sharks this season, but the organization has yet to name a captain. As a 19-year-old, Celebrini is the youngest player on the roster, yet he will be the leader of Canada’s group.
At the time of this writing, we still do not know all of the Vancouver Canucks who will be representing their country at this tournament. Linus Karlsson and Liam Öhgren will be playing for Team Sweden, while Filip Hronek, who suffered an injury in the pre-tournament, has not yet been confirmed for the tournament.
Here is the entire Team Canada roster:
Forwards: Mathew Barzal (NYI), Connor Brown (NJD), Robert Thomas (STL), Dylan Cozens (OTT), Gabe Vilardi (WPG), Mark Scheifele (WPG), Emmitt Finnie (DET), Macklin Celebrini (SJS), Dylan Holloway (STL), Ryan O’Reilly (NSH), John Tavares (TOR), and Fraser Minten (BOS).
Defencemen: Dylan DeMelo (WPG), Denton Mateychuk (CBJ), Sam Dickinson (SJS), Evan Bouchard (EDM), Darnell Nurse (EDM), Zach Whitecloud (CGY), Parker Wotherspoon (PIT), and Morgan Rielly (TOR).
Goalies: Cam Talbot (DET), Jack Ivankovic (University of Michigan, NSH prospect), and Jet Greaves (CBJ).
Misha Donskov is the Head Coach, with Spencer Carbery (WSH), Ryan Huska (CGY) and DJ Smith (LAK) serving as his assistant coaches. Kyle Dubas (PIT), Jason Spezza (PIT) and Brad Treliving make up Team Canada’s management team.
The tournament will consist of 16 teams, split evenly into two groups. This year, Canada is in Group B with Sweden, Czechia, Denmark, Slovakia, Norway, Slovenia, and Italy. Team USA, Switzerland, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Austria, Hungary, and Great Britain make up Group A.
The World Championships will run for over two weeks, from May 15-31. Canada kicks off their tournament on the 15, when they take on Canucks’ Linus Karlsson, Liam Öhgren, and Team Sweden. Puck drop is set for 7:20 AM PT.
