One of the recent additions to the Vancouver Canucks is set to jump into the lineup with his new team.
On Sunday, general manager Patrik Allvin announced that the team has activated forward Marco Rossi from injured reserve. In a corresponding move, the Canucks have placed centre Elias Pettersson on IR with an upper-body injury.
Both moves come ahead of the Canucks’ matchup on the East Coast against the New Jersey Devils. It would be Rossi’s first game with his new team, as he’s listed as the centre on the top line between Jake DeBrusk and Brock Boeser. The 24-year-old was part of the massive deal late last Friday that saw the Canucks trade captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild. In return, the Canucks received Rossi, defenceman Zeev Buium, and forward Liam Öhgren, along with the Wild’s 2026 first-round pick.
Rossi has been out of action since Nov. 11 due to a lower-body injury. In 17 appearances thus far, he has notched four goals and nine assists for 13 points.
The Feldkirch, Austria, native has spent his entire young NHL career with the Wild, the team that selected him ninth overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. In 202 career games, he has posted 49 goals and 64 assists for 114 points.
Pettersson’s placement on IR is retroactive to Dec. 5, the last game he played before being ruled out due to the ailment. He travelled with the team on its five-game road trip through the Eastern Conference, with the team hoping he can jump back in the lineup soon.
In Pettersson’s three-game absence, the Canucks have gone 1-2-0, falling to the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres. In 28 games thus far, the 27-year-old has posted eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points, and now leads the team in scoring after the Hughes deal.
The Canucks (11-17-3) hold the worst record in the NHL, 10 points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
