The Vancouver Canucks have signed a couple of players to two-way contracts.
First, the club signed forward Akil Thomas to a one-year contract. General manager Ryan Johnson made the announcement on Wednesday morning, a couple of hours into the NHL free agency window opening.
Thomas, 26, is a right-shot centre/winger who was the 51st overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Thomas has spent the majority of his career with the LA Kings organization, and was traded to the St. Louis Blues in December 2025. He spent the entirety of the 2025-26 season in the AHL, tallying 13 points in 19 games with Ontario, and nine through 20 games with the Springfield Thunderbirds.
To this point, Thomas has 32 NHL games under his belt, all with the Kings. Through those games, he has four goals and three assists. For the Canucks, Thomas is nice organizational depth and a decent call-up option who should help push the pace in Abbotsford.
According to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali — The Team, Thomas’ contract carries a $900,000 NHL salary and cap hit, and an AHL salary of $375,000.
Canucks sign Trey Fix-Wolansky
Shortly after, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Canucks signed right winger Trey Fix-Wolansky to a one-year, two-way contract. Friedman
As a reminder, two-way contracts mean nothing for a player’s waiver eligibility. All a two-way contract means is that a player is paid a different salary depending on if they are in the NHL or if they are in the AHL.
Fix-Wolansky is a 27-year-old right shot winger who was a 7th round pick back in the 2018 NHL Draft. Listed at 5’7, he’s an undersized winger who hasn’t played an NHL game since the 2023-24 season, spending most of his time in the AHL. Fix-Wolansky signed a one-year contract with the New York Rangers last season, and enjoyed a 31-goal campaign with the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.
Both of these players are likely to spend most of next season in Abbotsford.
The Canucks have already signed forward Paul Cotter and defenceman Luke Schenn today, bringing their total number of signings on the day up to four. Check out our live blog by clicking here!
