Wednesday night’s game is the last game the Vancouver Canucks will play before that 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. The Canucks find themselves in the mushy middle. They’re looking at selling off some of their expiring assets but also want to push toward the playoffs and will look to add some players with term.
This means those expiring players and fans have to be prepared for the fact that this could be the final game they play in a Canucks uniform at Rogers Arena.
The expiring players that may be on the move are Pius Suter, Derek Forbort and fan favourite Brock Boeser.
Boeser has spent his entire nine-year NHL career in Vancouver. He joined the Canucks at the tail end of the 2016-2017 season as a 20-year-old. Boeser made his NHL debut in his home state of Minnesota against the Wild, where he netted his first NHL goal. Now 28, Boeser has grown up in Vancouver and played over 500 games here. But tonight might be his last.
“Yeah, I’m trying not to really think about that,” Boeser replied when discussing his potential final game in a Canuck sweater. “I honestly have no idea what’s going to happen. I’m really just trying to focus on the game tonight. Obviously, it might be a little difficult, but I’m going to do the best I can to really dial it in and be prepared to, you know, go out there and work hard and continue to be a leader and try and help our team win a hockey game.”
There has been speculation on what the Canucks are going to do with Boeser. Insiders around the league have presented all three options: Extending him, keeping him and trading him. While those are the only three options, it shows the true uncertainty of his future with the club as the deadline is just days away.
“Yeah, I mean, anytime you have uncertainty, it’s scary. The unknown is scary,” Boeser said. “So it’s obviously a little bit of stress involved in that, but it’s not a great situation. But like I said, I’m really trying to just focus on tonight. And, you know, I’m still here. I’m still with the Canucks, and that’s my main worry right now.”
Boeser took some time to reflect on his time and appreciation of Canucks fans and the city of Vancouver:
“I can’t say enough about the fan base and the city. Everyone’s so kind to me just out and about. Everyone’s always had my back and supported me. And it’s something that I really appreciate about this place.
“I just loved it from the start, since the first day Stech [Troy Stecher] brought me to get sushi here – the amazing food. I’ve got some dogs and outdoors and just the ups and downs that I’ve gone through within my life. And you know how supportive everyone’s been – including you guys [media]. So this place is awesome. And you know, I’m still here, so I’m not gonna talk like I’m leaving, but I obviously love this place.”
As much as Boeser loves the city of Vancouver and all the fans, hockey remains a business. Sometimes, it’s hard for players to separate from the business side of things. Boeser shared that this was the toughest that he’s had to deal with, but he is living in the now and focused on being a Canuck:
“I’m still here. So I’m gonna act like I’m still here, and really just take this afternoon to dial in for tonight and bring the best I can bring.”
